History

Workers' Day, also known as May Day or International Workers' Day, has been celebrated in South Africa since the early 20th century. During apartheid, it was particularly significant as workers' organisations played a crucial role in the struggle for liberation. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and other unions organised mass action and strikes that contributed to ending apartheid. After 1994, 1 May became an official public holiday, recognising the contributions of workers to society.

Significance

Workers' Day honours the contributions of workers to the economy and society. It celebrates the achievements of the labour movement in securing workers' rights, including fair wages, reasonable working hours, and safe working conditions. Trade unions often organise rallies and events to highlight ongoing labour issues.
