What is the history of Freedom Day?

Freedom Day commemorates 27 April 1994, when South Africa held its first democratic elections in which all citizens could vote regardless of race. The election resulted in Nelson Mandela becoming the country's first Black president and the African National Congress (ANC) forming the first democratic government.
