History
National Women's Day commemorates 9 August 1956, when more than 20,000 women of all races marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the extension of pass laws to women. The march was led by Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. The women delivered petitions containing more than 100,000 signatures to Prime Minister J.G. Strijdom's office. Their protest song 'Wathint' Abafazi, Wathint' imbokodo' (You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock) became a rallying cry.
Significance
This day celebrates the strength and resilience of South African women and their contributions to society. It honours the 1956 marchers and all women who continue to fight for equality and justice. August is designated Women's Month, with various events and initiatives promoting women's rights and empowerment.
