What is the history of Family Day?

Previously known as Easter Monday, this day was renamed Family Day in 1995 to make it more inclusive in the new democratic South Africa. The change reflected the government's commitment to creating holidays that all South Africans, regardless of religious belief, could celebrate. While it retains its Christian significance as the day after Easter Sunday for many, the broader focus on family makes it meaningful for everyone.
