History

Originally known as Boxing Day, this holiday has British origins dating back to when servants received boxes of gifts from their employers the day after Christmas. In South Africa, the day was renamed the Day of Goodwill in 1994 to be more inclusive and to emphasise generosity and goodwill to others. The change reflected the new government's approach of creating holidays that unite rather than divide.

Significance

The Day of Goodwill encourages South Africans to show generosity and kindness to others, particularly those less fortunate. It extends the Christmas spirit of giving and often sees charitable activities and community support initiatives. Many South Africans also use this day to continue holiday celebrations with family and friends.
